Skiathos has a unique atmosphere and the place to stay is The Achladies Apartments. While staying at The Achladies Apartments you will experience the silver sparcle of the sea from your balcony each morning, and the sound of birds singing to welcome the new day.In the early part of the evening before dusk, the colour of the sea changes slowly into the most beautiful shades of pink and turquoise creating a relaxing atmosphere. When there is a full moon, the view from your balcony is magical. The moon shines over the sea,and it brings to mind Homer's phrase of "the wine dark sea". The Achladies Apartments garden trees and goldfish pools attract various species of wild birds from small song birds and turtle doves to birds of pray like Kestrels. The large white polar tree that was planted from a branch by us is now the home of our handraised female Scops owel that each early summer raises her own babies to the delight of our clients and other tourists that watch her feed her young each evening. The gardens and the flowering trees attract some very lovely butterflies that are wonderful to watch and photograph. The small pools attract various species of dragonflies and damselflies. The terrpins in their small pool are a delight to watch as they stretch their limbs to get the warm rays of the sun. The evening is a special time of the day when walking through The Achladies Apartments gardens. The fragrant evening and night flowering plants set forth their various scents that blend into an unusual Achladies perfume to experience. http://achladiesapartments.com

The Achladies Apartments history and Gardens

The Achladies Apartments were the first Apartments for rent in the bay of Achladies. Therefore, we kept our original name for over 30 years, since we mainly work with personal recommendation advertising. The Apartments are run by Alexander and Pavlina Karvounis and their family. We have several repeat clients that have been staying with us for over 20 years. We have had clients refering to our place as "a little bit of Paradise".
Our gardens have been called the "Secret Gardens" of Skiathos, "a Hidden Paradise" because of their location here at Achladies bay. The Apartments stay somewhat hidden from the main road and can be clearly seen only from the sea. If we were to have chosen another name, it would be "Shangrila", a place in the novel of James Hilton's "Lost Horizon". All that is visible from the road side, is the reception (first) floor and the parking lot.
We feel that the location is perfect for someone who does not want to be leaving the beach early. You can go back and forth with hardly any effort, while staying in our Apartments. Our family lives here on the island of Skiathos and can help you with any problems that might occure while staying here. We speak both English and Greek.
There are several Super-Markets located in our area. They can deliver to your door, without further charges. We also have a boat taxi that runs 20 minute rides from our beach to the town of Skiathos and back. We are located 3 kms from the town.
Apartments and Location
Our studio apartments are spacious compared to package tour studio apartments available on Skiathos. The apartment complex is built on a gentle slope that begins from the main road, with our small parking lot and ends to our gardens and our 30 meter path to the sandy beach.
Our beach entrance is located next to the Paradise Taverna, formely called Achladies Taverna, just in front of our complex. Our neighbor to the side is the Hotel Esperides. Both the taverna and the hotel have a policy against loud music. So, our area is a place of relaxation in which you can hear birds singing instead of loud music playing. For this reason we do not have television sets in our apartments. We also do not have air condition units, but desk fans can be provided upon request of our clients. The apartments are self catering.
The Achladies apartments are recommended by the following travel guides: Lonely Planet - Greek Islands and Greece - March 2004 and March 2005. They called us a "Hidden Gem".

Travel to Skiathos
Skiathos is easily accessible.High season sees approximately 20 flights daily, direct from most European countries, plus several inland flights from E. Venizelos,(Athens' international airport). The island may be reached by flying dolphin or ferry boat from mainland Greece. The two ports are Agios Constantinos (an hour and a half's drive from Athens)and Volos (another hour and a half's drive north). The fact that Skiathos is accessible directly from most European countries, makes it an ideal resort for someone needing to spend a few days at the office mid-holiday;Excursions around the island are available and boats for hire on a daily or weekly basis.
Skiathos history and info

Skiathos took part in wars against the Persians and in 478 BC, became a part of the Athenian Alliance.Later was occupied by Alexander the Great and then by the Romans. In 1204 was conquered by the Venetians and in 1583 by the Turks. It was then that the inhabitants of the old town, built on the site of present-day Skiathos, abandoned it and constructed on the north side of the island the famous Kastro, perched on a nearly invisible rock.
During the Greek War of Independence of 1821, many warriors from Thessaly opposite, took refuge on the island.Skiathos was liberated in 1823. In 1830, the local people, left the historic Kastro and rebuilt Chora.
Skiathos was one of the unknown paradises to be discovered.
Skiathos is one of the most beautiful islands in Greece. Upon first seeing it visitors must think: "how can such a small island have all this beauty?". When you are getting to know the island, first of all, you have to pay a visit to its picturesque and cosmopolitan Chora.
During the day, you can enjoy a hanging around into its narrow alleys, which are filled with vitality every summer. Here you have a lot of things to see and to do. You can visit for example the lovely small peninsula Bourtzi, situated between the two harbors of Chora plenty of pine trees and the ruins of a wall of an old castle. Or you can visit one of the beautiful churches here, like the impressive Treis Ierarches, the cathedral church in the upper part of the town. You can either enjoy your lunch or your dinner in one of the fine tavernas. And for nightlife, be sure! Chora does not sleep until early in the morning! A large number of clubs, pubs, bars and discotheques are waiting for your night amusement.
